Recently President Goodluck Jonathan, commissioned nuclear power plant in Nigeria for electricity supply, as laudable as that might sound to a Country that has suffered black out since the British left the Country in 1960, were the citizens and corporations resorted to stand by electric generators for power supply amidst the noise and black smoke polution, its no surprise that a great section of the population would clap hands for such elephant project out of naivete unaware of the dangers associated with nuclear desasters.
Since 1950 the International Atomic Energy has recorded numerous nuclear accidents with devasting consequences to human, animals, plants and the environment as a whole. A whole area of 3,000 squre miles in Japan are uninhabitable due to rediation from nuclear accident, the survivals of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima are dying of cancer and sometimes undiagnose illneses
Chirnobyl nuclear accident, left millions homeles and thousands suffering from cancer
there are many other nuclear accidents recorded by IAE including the most recent in Fukushima, Japan fresh in our memory.
This is a period in World history that Countries with nuclear energy are are scatching their heads not knowing where or how to dispose of nuclear wastes which is highly toxic and radioactive.
Now; my point is that, Nigeria does not have enough qualified nuclear Engineers in the panel of commissioners of the project to air their opinion because our highly educated men and women have taken refuge in Western Countries due to insecurity and instability.
Nigeria does not have adequate maintainance culture and the technical know how to service a nuclear plant, Nuclear plant is not a childs play and should be in a Countries top security agender with respect of recent spate of bombing by Islamic extrimists in Nigeria.
Nigeria does not have enough Engineers on grounds to even build the nuclear plant which would be a National security conern and must not be handled by foreign experts who have no interest for the development of the Country nor her Security and well being of her People than what remunerations they could get from the project.
Recently I read about a Chinese Company that built 6 wind turbines for Nigeria around Lagos, in less than 1 year 4 of the turbines broke down, Nigerian technicians could not fix them because the repair manuals were in Chinese Language and even if it had been in English the Chinese Engineers would not let the Nigerian Engineers to go in with them during construction and maintainance.
Would you be intereted for the nuclear plant to be sited at your back yard?
what is your opinion ? say some thing now, because you are about to see the last of Nigeria as we know it should there be nuclear accident in Nigeria which is eminent, its not a matter of if but when.
I have done my civic reponsibilty as a Nigerian, do yours, because we love Nigeria.
